The Dick Turpin

49 Moorcroft Road, Woodthorpe, York. YO24 2RQ. Tel. 01904 707382

Always a warm welcome from Landlord Alan King and partner Joanne MacPherson

The Dick Turpin, in Moorcroft Road, Woodthorpe, opened on May 19, 1965, and a series of events were held to mark its 50th anniversary.
The pub was added to the Yorkshire Real Heritage Pub list last year, as it was considered a rare example of a 20th Century pub that has not been rearranged, redeveloped or demolished. It is one of only a handful of additions to the new Yorkshire's Real Heritage Pubs. It has been singled out as a surprisingly-rare example of its era. While many other twentieth-century pubs have been rearranged, redeveloped or demolished, the pub in Moorcroft Road has remained virtually unchanged.

Well-known for the long-running Sunday charity quizzes. The public bar has big-screen TV, pool table, dart board and juke box, while the large, comfortable lounge is popular for functions.

The Lounge Bar is available free of charge during opening times, contact Alan or Jo for details.

Jo and Carole team-up for York Against Cancer

A York hairdresser helped by York Against Cancer is planning a fundraising event for us - and a generous pub landlady is helping make the event a success. Carole Henson used our minibus to get to Leeds for radiotherapy after finding she had breast cancer in 2014. Through us, she also enjoyed a morale-boosting make-over and an exercise programme for patients recovering from cancer.
“I always said once I felt better and had recovered that I wanted to say thank you, and here we are!” said Carole, who has now joined forces with Joanne Macpherson, landlady of the Dick Turpin pub in Woodthorpe, to plan a fantastic family fun day at the pub on May 7.
Raffle prizes so far include a hot-air balloon flight with pilot Oliver Webb, a gyrocopter ride with gyro experience, Rufforth, York City Knights tickets and an Elemis facial at Face etc… Medispa, Coppergate, York.
Attractions include a bouncy castle, music, drinks, a barbecue and ice-cream van, face painting, a tombola and much more.
White Watch at Acomb Fire Station will be bringing their engine along, emergencies permitting, and Carole plans a craft stall selling her own items including hand-crafted metal flowers, jewellery, bags and homewares. Joanne, who last year held a highly successful charity weekend that raised £4,500 for good causes, had not planned to hold another event but found herself drawn to offer help when she heard about Carole’s plans. “I do have a busy life, but I get very excited about raising money for good causes!” she said.Carole and Joanne are still on the lookout for prizes for their raffle and tombola.
